UFC middleweight champ Sean Strickland issued a fiery response to Colby Covington at a press conference before the UFC 296 ceremonial weigh-ins.
Strickland took a break from a heated verbal spat with his UFC 297 title foe Dricus Du Plessis to drag Covington, who got cheers and boos at a Thursday press conference that briefly turned violent when he crassly insulted welterweight champ Leon Edwards’ late father.
“You guys Colby fans in here? Give me a show of hands,” Strickland offered. “You guys, let me give you some facts about Colby. Colby is an utter piece of s***.”
Du Plessis tried to redirect the conversation to their fight, which headlines UFC 297 on Jan. 20 in Toronto. But Strickland interrupted and went on with his rant.
“No, no, no, I’m going to explain what Colby is,” he said. “If you know Colby on a personal level, he’s f***** over everybody he f****** knows, and I take Colby as a personal insult to me, because the Trump Republicans, you guys are my people, the blue-collar workers. You guys are my f****** people, and you’ve got a c*** like Colby coming in here and taking up the banner when he doesn’t give a f*** about you.
“And him making fun of Leon’s dad, that is the biggest f****** c*** move you can do. That is the biggest c*** move you can do. Leon’s mom – Dad good guy, bad guy, doesn’t f****** matter – she raised a boy to be a f****** man, to win a title, to be a good man, and a real f****** American would applaud him for that. They wouldn’t tear him down for that. S
“o just so you know, Colby is a fake, f****** p****, and if he was standing here right next to me, the only f****** thing he would do is call 911, because he is the definition of a f****** b****.”
Covington took several shots at Strickland during Wednesday’s media day for UFC 296, calling attention to his comments about women and predicting an easy fight should they ever meet in the octagon. Earlier in his UFC career, Strickland fought as a welterweight but later moved up to middleweight, where he claimed the title with a massive upset win over ex-champ Israel Adesanya.
Strickland didn’t take much time on Covington, as Du Plessis gave him plenty to handle on the microphone. He erupted in insults after the South African title challenger brought his past with abuse into the conversation, and UFC security held him back for a faceoff promoting the fight.
Covington and Strickland share a reputation for alternately offending and amusing fans. But even Strickland echoed other fighters who said Covington crossed the line in his most recent attacks.
