Luana Santos’ bantamweight move didn’t go as planned.
The Brazilian was the lone fighter to miss at Friday’s official weigh-ins for UFC Vegas 83, coming in at 139 pounds, three pounds over the 135-pound limit (including the one-pound allowance for a non-title fight). It is not yet known if her bout with Stephanie Egger will proceed as scheduled and, if so, what percentage of Santos’ purse will be forfeited as penalty.
Santos most recently competed at flyweight, defeating Juliana Miller via first-round knockout this past August. She made appearances at bantamweight prior to making her UFC debut.
Saturday’s bantamweight headliners Song Yadong and Chris Gutierrez successfully made weight, though not without a little drama. Gutierrez’s weigh-in took extra time as he initially stepped to the scale, then stepped off without a reading. He called for the box to cover him so he could strip down and then successfully made weight at 136 pounds.
Co-main event light heavyweights Anthony Smith and Khalil Rountree also successfully made weight at 205.5 pounds and 204 pounds, respectively.
