EP 9 | WHAT A BLACK BELT ENDURES | Coachella Season 2 | BJJ Series

(motivational music) (calm piano music) – Freedom. Is not free, in case you didn't know. It takes sacrifice,
commitment, and vision. Just like the gentle art And a black belt is forged by the mistakes that
they make along the way. From the failures they endure, but continue moving forward, with the courage to try again. They solider on, always evolving. This, is what we're training for. – Get to the turtle you're going to be down on all fours again. So I'm going to be here in this position where I'm pulling his
shoulders and armpits, and I got a shoulder in the back here. I'm going to go on the backside, I'm going to start from here, step under, and then
I'm going to step over. Just like our walk around drill. I'm going to step over, cover the hip, my knee goes right by his
and I'm kind of in that knee on belly position and
blocking his tricep here. And when I'm ready to go back, I do the same thing, I step under, and then over, and I come back.

I go to the other side, step under, over, everything is off
the ground besides my foot, blocking the elbow,
controlling the hip here with the short arm. Step back under. You guys got it? Let's give it a try, one, two, three. (everyone claps) – So we'll talk about a quad choke and another choke that kind of goes with it. So knee on the inside here,
we're posted on the outside. I'm choking with the near hand. The far hand is gonna open
the collar and feed it. Just the collar, get a good grip here, not too much arm, where he can roll me. And I want to stay short, here. Now I go cross collar,
and to finish my basic clock choke, I'm going to step one, and my second step is going to take my hip and put it right over his shoulder, falls right into that
pocket, steps over the top, head down, and you should be tapping.

Sometimes, if you feel like
you're off balance here, I like to come through
and I use my bicep to stuff his head under his body, pulling him up, and goes right
to his back, finish there. One, two, three. Let's try it, one, two, three. (everybody claps) Here, in that same position. I'm just going to go nearside. And I'm going to loop. Right as I loop, his hand is
going under, roll it under. Snake out, until I can
tee off, belly down. This hand keeps snaking
through, cause this hand chinches it, tightens the choke. One more time. He's in position, loop, under the arm, behind the head, walking, flat teeing off, snaking, and then I'm cinching here. You guys got it? Let's go, one, two three. (everybody claps) (deep bass music) (calm inspirational music) – I got to take a deep breath on this one. My friend, my fellow
student, and my Doctor.

I met him seven, eight, ten years ago, sorry senior moment, I lose count. And I go into this Doctor
that was recommend to me and I see this buffed up youngster, and I go, "man why are
you in such good shape?" He goes, "well I do Jiu-Jitsu." And I said, "you don't do it
with us, where do you do it?" And he told me brand x, and I said, "no, no, no, you belong with us." And this is all about kindred spirit, everybody in this room is
connected to a kindred spirit. And I just knew the
second I met this guy that he belonged here.

And when I saw him starting
to come to practice, and over the years, until he started choking me out, and I thought, "you know, he's my doctor," "should I report him to the
American Medical Association?" "Isn't he suppose to be healing me?" And I come down, expecting
things to be easy with him, next thing I know, I'm doing this stuff, and he's choking me out,
I said, "what's wrong with this picture?" Anyway, to have this kind
of a personal relationship where I literally, at times, depend on him for my life, to also, be welcomed into this club, and for him when he makes this, the things that this guy
has done for the school.

He's just, if there is such
thing as the whole package. He's done so much I mean he's
a teacher, he's a competitor, he's brought home gold, he's
carried the flag into combat, he's brought home world titles. And, all under our school name. So I mean, I just have such
a deep personal feeling for this guy.

(applause) (calm piano music).
