Lo's knee slipping pass Tell me in the comments
if you were here on the channel in the beginning Let's take a step back and study
Romulo Barral's knee slip, which Lo cites as an influence
on his passages Before you see what Romulo does,
understand why he does it When you slip your knee,
always think about your hip from the guard: Is he free or not? Too much pressure without hip control =
little chance of passing Hip can move
out to replace shield Also without weight on hip Hip can move up Hip can follow No pass While hip can run away,
reset guard it's always an option Hips can go backwards Replaced guard Romulo's solution?
"hugging the hip" with his arm Barral is "hugging the hip"
with his right arm No fencing.

Your hand grabs the pants This control is preventing
the hip from going backwards Pulls the hips in and forces
the head to the other side to pass Forces the head to the other side
pressing to pass Without this grip
the guard can simply uncross the feet and evade the
hip to restore the guard Without the grip Go back as much as necessary Open and restore the guard Forcing the head to the other side won't
help if you don't control the hip Forcing the head But the hip is free The guards more decent people can
eventually replace guard even with head hugged Now hugging Look what happens if you
try to uncross and pull away Pulled in Leg comes off the moment you try to open That hug and grip on pants Can also be used to plan
the hip in a dynamic way Why planked? Passing is easier
when the hips are flat Hips flat,
slipping the knee is easy Flattened
Hips can't go anywhere Jumps in time, flattening the
opponent's hips is an opportunistic idea Romulo can plan
you for long periods with his grip to press and pass Romulo pushes down
with the pant grip to kill the hip These control points plan
the hips and shoulders very effectively Head hugging
Head locking Uses foot as a wedge to pass He tries as many times as necessary Once locked that way, the hip is flat with no chance
of turning to the sides to escape Passed However, it is not necessary to use the head
locking under the arm Use the locking head to start forcing
the opponent's head to the other side Hand pushing the opponent's head Romulo Stopped pushing,
and started grappling With his head down he can really Force the opponent's head to the
other side HEAD TURNED Continues using free foot
to push until pass NOW UNDER ARM Head turned Romulo pressing to plank
using these grips allow him
to systematically progress to pass Beware of this idea Both hands busy
with the head and hips can be risky FORCING THE HEAD Don't give to support to stop the sweep Lo's active support improves
the sweep defense But sacrifices some control Watch these again to
compare strategies Romulo's version still works great Romulo used this again
recently in ACB 13 Hugs the head and hips Hip can't come off Old School is still cool Remember, "blocking the hip breakout"
is a concept And it can be expressed in many ways No grip on pants
Use elbow to block hip Check out this crazy variation of
Tomoyuki Hashimoto, Champion do Pan 2018 Go to hug the hip Now step in
for a Peruvian choke Watch the guard slamming his back
for defense nder the choke Opponent uncrosses to
try bridge and sweep This choke "encourages" you
to plan your back Hashimoto wants you to plan your back
to escape the Peruvian choke Hashimoto uses the grip on the pants
to keep the hip locked When the guard boards the back
defending the choke Pass Guardeiro rolls putting his back
on the mat to defend the choke Hold on the pants keeps the hip flat
on the mat while his knee forces the exit Note that the threat of the
Peruvian choke is real here You don't need to fencing to
slip your knee properly Powerful A pant grip
to control the hip works too Knowing the "move"
Romulo does one thing How he finds movement against a
variety of defenses is where his trump card lies Check out the next part of this study What's your passing strategy?
