11 Wai Kru Muay Thai Festival 2015

Muay Thai boxing is an international phenomenon
that’s gained a lot of diehard fans in recent years. In Thailand, March 17 is an important
day for the ancient tradition. It’s Nao Khanom Tom or as it’s known in English,
Boxer’s Day. That’s why 800 fighters from over 60 countries came to Thailand to celebrate
the 11th Annual Wai Kru Muay
Thai Ceremony. iTravel Channel headed down to the ancient
capital of Ayutthaya, about one hour north of Thailand’s present-day capital Bangkok.
It was a chance for people to learn about the deep and sacred meaning behind the Muay
Thai ritual known as Wai Kru.

Wai Kru is a way in which fighters pay respect
to their masters. It’s commonly performed at the start of every match as a show of gratitude
and merit-making. All 1,200 Muay Thai fights, both Thai and international, performed Wai
Kru for an intrigued crowd. Young Thai students also paid respects to
their Muay Thai teachers. Famous welterweight kickboxer Buakaw Banchamek led the Wai Kru
ceremony. Afterwards, the audience was treated to spectacular
presentations of martial arts fighting and craftsmanship. There was also Yantra tattooing
and writing and Aranyik sword making. Well-known Muay Thai camps and gyms answered questions
about the history and current practices of kickboxing to help everybody learn a little
more.
