Israel Adesanya places risky wager on Devin Haney ahead of Ryan Garcia matchup

Israel Adesanya put down a sizable — but potentially risky — wager on Devin Haney ahead of his boxing match with Ryan Garcia on Saturday night.

Betting on Haney to win isn’t that much of a surprise considering the overwhelming odds favoring the undefeated 25-year-old boxer to beat Garcia, with Haney sitting as high as an 8-to-1 favorite. But Adesanya didn’t just pick Haney to win.

Instead, the former UFC middleweight champion put down a $20,000 bet on Haney to win by knockout over Garcia.

It’s Haney’s perceived lack of knockout power that makes Adesanya’s wager a little riskier than usual. Haney hasn’t finished an opponent since knocking out Antonio Moran all the way back in 2019.

In his nine wins since that night, Haney remained undefeated but has gone to decision in each and every one of those fights, including recent wins over Regis Prograis, Vasily Lomachenko, and George Kambosos Jr.

During his career, Haney has 15 knockouts across 31 wins, but the majority of those finishes came before he was a champion or faced top-notch competition. He’ll attempt to change that narrative on Saturday in Brooklyn when he faces Garcia in a heated grudge match.

If Haney can pull off the knockout, Adesanya takes home just over $40,000 for the winning wager.

If not, he’ll be out $20,000.
